15 Facts You May Not Know About The Matterhorn

The Matterhorn, one of the world’s most famous and iconic mountains, is attracting thousands of tourists each year! Some come to admire its beauty and some intend to climb to the top.

But there’s much more that makes this mighty mountain so special. Here are some facts about the Matterhorn you may not know about and that have built its distinctive reputation.

15 facts about the Zermatt’s Matterhorn

1. The Matterhorn is believed to be 50-60 million years old! According to geologists, it was formed when the African crashed into the European continental plate. This technically means that the Matterhorn is formed from African rock.

2. The Matterhorn isn’t the highest mountain in Switzerland! It might be the most famous mountain but, it’s only the 10th highest within the Swiss Alps and the 12th highest peak in Western Europe. Standing 4’478 meters tall it’s one of the 48 Swiss peaks above 4000m.

3. The first ascent of the Matterhorn took place in July 1865. A group of seven people, led by Brit Edward Whymper, started the tour in Zermatt and successfully climbed to the top. Very unfortunately, four of them tragically died on the descent. It remains a mystery what exactly happened.

4. The group that started from Zermatt was not the only one that tried to reach the summit of the Matterhorn that day. There was another group that started from Italy but they had been 200m below the summit when the first successful ascent took place. The Italian climbers withdrew, but only three days later they reached the summit without any tragedy making it the first successful attempt from the Italian side over the Lion Ridge.

5. It took 6 more years until the first woman was able to successfully reach the peak of the Matterhorn in 1871. It was Lucy Walker, same as Edward Whymper who led the group that managed to be the first to reach the top, she was also British. She was also the first woman to summit the Eiger (1864).

6. The Matterhorn is considered to be one of the world’s most dangerous mountains. Since the first ascent in 1865, it’s estimated that over 500 people have died while climbing or descending the Matterhorn. These days, the danger especially comes from its popularity as overeager tourists without experience often try to climb it without a local guide.

7. Every year, between 3000 and 4000 people attempt to climb the peak. Out of the 300 to 400 people that tackle the ascent with the help of a guide, about 20 fail to reach the summit. Roughly 3500 people attempt to reach the peak without a guide. About 65% of them never reach the top, usually due to a lack of fitness or poor weather conditions. It’s estimated that on certain days when the conditions are ideal, there are up to 300 mountaineers that tackle this mighty mountain.

8. The oldest person to have ever reached the peak of the Matterhorn was Ulrich Inderbinen a local that summited the mountain at the age of 80. He first climbed the Matterhorn when he was 20 years old and throughout his life, he tackled it again on multiple occasions.

9. Back in the day, it used to take two days to climb the 1100 meters of the Matterhorn's North face. Nowadays, thanks to better equipment and knowledge about the mountain it doesn't take as much time. On average, the summit can be reached in roughly 8 to 10 hours.

10. It’s unclear who currently holds the record for the fastest ascent to the Matterhorn. There are many records as it depends on the starting point and route chosen from where the time was tracked. One notable achievement is the one from Andreas Steindl, a local from Zermatt. He started his ascent in front of Zermatt’s church, and it took him 3 hours, 59 minutes, and 52 seconds to climb to the peak and get back down to the town center!

11. Each year, the Air Zermatt flies various missions to rescue climbers who had accidents or overestimated their abilities. Like the number of deaths, the number of rescues has decreased in recent years. It can be assumed that it’s because nowadays more climbers climb with guides than in the past. 12. The Matterhorn also became known worldwide as the “Toblerone Mountain”. It first appeared on the packaging of the famous Toblerone chocolate in 1960. Chances are high that you’ve seen it before, but did you notice the bear in within the Matterhorn image on the Toblerone packaging? This is a reference to Bern, where Theodor Tobler first invented the chocolate bar.

13. The Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain not only in Switzerland but in the whole world. It's estimated that this picture-perfect rock makes it on to multiple millions of pictures annually.

14. In 2015, to mark 150 years since the first ascent, the route of the first ascent of the Matterhorn has been lit up with lamps that had been positioned along the path. A red light marked the spot where the accident took place where four men tragically fell to their deaths.

15. In 2020, due to the Corona pandemic, the Matterhorn was illuminated between the 24th of March and the 26th of April as a sign of hope and solidarity. During the 5 weeks, we were able to admire projections of words such as “hope” and “solidarity” as well as national flags and symbols such as a heart or mountaineers. In total, there were over 80 images that have been projected on our beloved Matterhorn.

There is so much you can do during your stay in Zermatt. But one thing you should for sure be doing at least once is go for a hike. Hiking is one of the best outdoor activities to do in Zermatt, especially during the summer months. It allows you to be in contact with nature whilst supporting your health. It's becoming increasingly popular all over the world.

We're certain that we all know that hiking is good for us, it’s a form of exercise that gets our heart rate up. The benefits are numerous and even a regular short hike can improve our physical and mental health significantly. Hiking in Zermatt can provide you with even more benefits besides health factors. 5 Reasons Why You Should Go Hiking In Zermatt

Reason 1: You’ll get THE best views of the Matterhorn

Yes, you can have amazing views of the Matterhorn from the center of Zermatt. Those pictures from the church bridge are for sure iconic. But, nonetheless, the best view you’ll only get from high up the mountains.

On top of that, depending on what hikes you do, you might even get as close to the Matterhorn as possible without having to climb it. You can take up the train or gondola to get some breathtaking views fro sure. But, don’t you want to see some different views as well?

Whether it’s the Matterhorn mirrored in a lake, the full view of the Matterhorn’s North Side, or the full panorama of the Matterhorn and its surrounding mountains, you’ll only get to experience those sights when going on a hike!

Bayard Tip: Combine your hike with a stay in a mountain hut so that you can get up early and enjoy the sunrise behind the Alps. Reason 2: You’ll be able to discover beautiful landscapes

Hiking not only provides you with the most amazing views of the Matterhorn. You’ll also get to experience the different landscapes we have around Zermatt.

There are hikes that will lead you deep into some of the small valleys situated around the area. That's where you’ll be able to discover how nature has been changing over the last years. Where there have been glaciers, you’ll now see rocky landscapes.

Other trails will lead you past glaciers, lakes, forests, small waterfalls, and some traditional mountain hamlets. All of which you wouldn’t be able to see if you wouldn’t go on a hike.

And that’s not even all, the flora you’ll get to experience during the hike is one of a kind. The edelweiss, gentian, and alpine rose are amongst the best-known flowers you can find in the area. Reason 3: You might be able to spot wildlife you wouldn’t see otherwise

The wildlife area around Zermatt, Täsch, and Randa is one of the largest in Switzerland. Birds of all kinds, chamois, marmots, mountain eagles, deers, ibex, and others are amongst the wild animals you could discover in the area. Please note that those are all wild animals and feeding them is forbidden and human contact must be avoided!

Marmots are probably the animals you'd encounter the easiest. Those ground squirrels can be spotted around various hiking trails in Zermatt. You'll have high chances to see them around the Sunegga/Blauherd area. Deers are often seen when walking through the woods around Zermatt as they tend to live in lower altitudes.

Chamois are living higher up the mountains. Depending on the weather and season, you might even be able to spot some from the cable cars going to Schwarzsee. On the other hand, finding an ibex takes more effort. Same as the chamois, it’s a variety of mountain goats that have adapted to live in steep and rocky. They're rarely seen on lower altitudes so you're only chance is to get up the mountains.

The wildlife of Zermatt is so diverse and there are even more wild animals you find around Zermatt. To see them it not only requires you to get into nature but you also need a bit of luck to spot them. Be sure to always keep your eyes open.

Reason 4: Everybody can do it, especially in Zermatt

Being located in the middle of Switzerland's mountain world, Zermatt offers an extensive choice of hiking trails. Surrounded by 38 four thousanders that are in the area and with a 400km hiking trail network, it is a true paradise for hikers.

Whether you’re only getting into hiking and want to start with a short and easy walk or whether you prefer to do big tours, Zermatt has routes that are suitable for anyone. You might even be more challenged to choose between all the different trails available than doing the actual hike.

Reason 5: You don’t need much to get started

Hiking is one of the best but at the same time easiest spots to start doing. Going on a hike is as simple as putting one some comfortable clothing and some good hiking shoes. To go hiking, you don’t need much fancy material like when practicing many other outdoor activities.

Besides not needing a lot of material, you also don’t need any special skills, to begin with. It's not necessary to take lessons or anything thereof to improve your abilities. All you have to do is get going and hopefully continue to do so on a regular basis.

Zermatt is a paradise for hiking, mountain touring and climbing enthusiasts. 38 four thousand-meter peaks can be reached from Zermatt making it a starting point for many small and bigger tours. So, it comes as no surprise that in total there are 16 mountain huts and 10 private cabins around the region.

This guide will help you get an overview of some of the amazing mountain huts that Zermatt has to offer. Whether you plan a simple hike where you stop for a quick lunch or a bigger tour where you need overnight accommodation, we are sure this guide can help you out. The Bayard Guide To The Mountain Huts In Zermatt

1. Rothorn

Thanks to its location at 3198m, the Rothorn hut promises a panoramic view of the four-thousanders surrounding Zermatt, such as the Matterhorn, the Dom, and Monte Rosa. During the summer months, it is the starting point for many high alpine tours.

If you take the direct way up from the town, you’ll pass two other must-visit huts in Zermatt, the Edelweiss, and Trift huts. The edelweiss hut is the only one that you’re able to see from bear eyes from the town center of Zermatt. If you’re wondering, it’s the small white house you can spot on a cliff surrounded by the forest on the west side of Zermatt.

Located only around 45 minutes up the mountains, it is the ideal spot for a refreshing drink or quick lunch during longer hikes. Once you continue the way up, you’ll arrive at a small valley called Trift where you’ll find the Berggasthaus Trift. If you plan to make a stop here be sure to try their homemade ice-tea. It’s one of the best we ever had.

2. Fluhalp

Located in the middle of the skiing and hiking area of the Rothorn Paradies, the Fluhalp offers a magnificent view of the Matterhorn making it the perfect lunch spot for your next hike or ski day. Yes, this hut is open during summer AND winter.

In summer you’ll be able to experience an overnight stay with unforgettable sunrises and sunsets whilst being as close to nature as you possibly can without missing out on the comfort of your own bed. And did you ever wonder where those pictures are taken where the Matterhorn is reflected in a lake? Well, you’re in luck because one of the lakes, the Stellisee, is just a short walk away.

During the winter months, the Fluhalp is especially famous for its delicious food that can be enjoyed on their big terrace whilst being able to listen to some great live music.

3. Hörnlihütte

The Hörnlihütte aka Basecamp Matterhorn is probably the most famous hut in Zermatt thanks to its strategic location directly at the foot of, you guessed it, the Matterhorn.

The hut is considered as the starting point for the ascent of this mighty mountain via the Hörnli and Zmutt ridge as well as the North face. But even if you’re not planning to conquer the Matterhorn, you should still consider planning a hike to the Hörnlihütte.

Admiring the breathtaking scenery of the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains whilst enjoying a tasty meal is a one of a kind experience you shouldn’t miss out on. Who doesn’t dream of getting this close to the Matterhorn?

4. Monte Rosa

The most unconventional and another one of the most popular huts in Zermatt is the Monte Rosa hut. Located in the middle of some of Zermatt’s glaciers and surrounded by many 4000m peaks, it’s definitely not only its design and shape that make it so special.

If you’re looking for a traditional hut made of stone or wood, you won’t be able to find what you are expecting. The Monte Rosa hut is a modern building with a dazzling aluminum façade making it self-sufficient in energy.

The hut can be reached within 3.5 to 4 hours from Rotenboden. Instead of walking on a regular hiking trail, the route to the Monte Rosa hut will also partially lead you across the glacier. So be sure to pack some crampons for better stability and increased security.

The hut is not only open during the summer months. During winter, you'll also have the chance to enjoy the unique view from their sunny terrace or to stay overnight. In summer you'd walk over a panoramic trail, whereas in winter things are a little bit different. Instead of hiking your way to the hut, you'll be able to reach it with your skis on!

5. Schönbiel

Surrounded by the Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Obergabelhorn and other mountains, the Schönbiel hut is the starting point to the classic and breathtaking tours such as the "Haute Route" or the "Tour du Ciel". But same as the Hörnlihütte, even if you don’t plan to go on a big tour, it’s still worth a visit.

To reach the hut you’ll experience an unforgettable hike along the north face of the Matterhorn. The path to the hut leads you through a variety of landscapes. You’ll pass various alpine meadows and as you continue your way up nature transforms into a rough mountainous region where you’ll spot the Zmutt glacier that due to its retreat reveals how much nature is changing. Where years ago, was still a thick layer of ice, there is now a rough rocky landscape.

A little tip from us, if you like to do bigger hikes or a mini-tour around Zermatt:

As mentioned in our last blog post, the hike over Höhbalmen leads you deep into the Zmutt Valley. Here you could continue your hike even further into the valley along the Matterhorn’s north face. Eventually, you’ll reach the Schönbiel Hut, where you could fuel up your energy tank with a delicious meal or an overnight stay.

6. Ze Seewjinu

Last but not least, the Ze Seewjinu mountain lodge, formerly Berghaus Grünsee is ideally located in the middle of the skiing and hiking area between Rothorn and Gornergrat. Thanks to its location it’s not only open during the summer months but also during the winter season.

In summer, the area is perfect for some smaller or larger hikes and bike tours whilst enjoying the beautiful alpine flora. Only a few meters away from the hut, you’ll also find the Grünsee lake, making it also a perfect stop for a family trip.

In winter, you can benefit from the ski-in & out amidst the ski area as the lodge is situated right next to some of Zermatt’s top slopes. Waking up high up in the mountains and being able to just go outside, put your skis on and go, how good does that sound?

The Bayard Zermatt Hiking Guide

Being located in the middle of the impressive Swiss Alps and being home to the Matterhorn, Zermatt is a true paradise for hiking fans. With over 400km of hiking trails in the area, one can easily get overwhelmed by the choice of paths to take. This guide will help you to find the best route for your next hike. We've already given you a list of the Top 5 Things to Do in Zermatt in Summer and now we are recommending our favorites hikes around Zermatt for each of the different levels; easy, medium, and hard.

Please be aware that some of the presented hikes require experience and good physical health. Also, note that some trails will need you to get to the starting point via other hikes or via gondolas/trains. Have a look at Zermatt Tourismus and Matterhorn Paradise, for the more details of each trail, such as safety information and exact route descriptions.

The Bayard Zermatt Hiking Guide

1. Furi Suspension Bridge Trail (easy)

Our first recommendation is the Furi Suspension Bridge Trail. The trail starts in Furi, which you can reach via gondola or a short hike up from the town center.

Before reaching the 100-meter-long suspension bridge you’ll pass by the Furi hamlet and walk through the forest over wooden walkways that lead over a small stream. Eventually, you’ll reach the suspension bridge.

The bridge lays 90 meters above the Gornerschlucht gorger and is leading from one side of the valley to the other. It may seem scary for some to cross this bridge as you can see the foaming water of the Gorner river below your feet. But don’t worry, it’s completely safe.

Once you reach the other side, you’ll find yourself back in the idyllic mountain forest that surrounds Zermatt. On the way back to the Furi station you’ll also pass the Dossen Glacier Garden.

Here you’ll get the chance to admire the incredible power and beauty of nature. The Glacier Garden reveals what is normally concealed by a glacier; boulders polished smooth, glacial mills and strange rock formations.

2. Riffelseeweg (easy)

Another trail classified as easy is the Riffelsee Lake trail. To get to the starting point of the trail you’ll have to take the Gornergrat train up until Rotenboden. Here the path will lead you to the Riffelsee, a photographic site in a class of its own.

The little lake is usually still and perfectly reflects the Matterhorn, making it ideal for taking pictures. The surrounding alpine flora, the view of the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps, and the idyllic landscape make the perfection complete.

The Riffelsee lake is a favorite amongst many visitors not only because of its beautiful Matterhorn view but also because it has much more to offer. It is easily accessible making it the ideal choice for families with children. Even climbing enthusiasts will get the chance to spend one of their best days up there, as the Riffelhorn is filled with various climbing routes for experts.

Depending on the season, you might even be able to spot some wild animals, such an ibex in the Gaggenhaupt region. No matter what, the Riffelseeweg is a must-do for everyone.

3. 5 Lakes Walk (medium)

The 5 Lakes Walk is truly in a class of its own among the hiking trails in the region. As given in its name, throughout this hike you’ll pass 5 different lakes, providing you with many opportunities to take some beautiful photos.

The path leads past the lakes of the Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee, and Leisee. Each of them is very different and special in its own way thanks to its shape, color, and size. But there is one thing they all have in common. They make a good photo spot wherein 3 of them you’ll even be able to see a reflection of the Matterhorn on their surface.

Each lake promises a unique experience. Swimming in the Leisee where the kids can play around the playground, exploring rare flowers around the Grindjisee, there is so much to do and explore around this trail.

Throughout the path, you’ll also pass by some of Zermatt’s best mountain restaurants. As recommended in our previous blog post, enjoying a tasty meal in one of the amazing mountain restaurants, is one of the Top things to do in Zermatt in summer. So why not combine your hike with a quick lunch stop? We promise, you won’t regret it.

4. Matterhorn Trail (easy)

The Matterhorn trail leads you right to the foot of the Matterhorn. Starting at Schwarzsee you’ll walk down to the Stafelalp, continue to Zmutt until reaching Zermatt. On the way, the trail will reveal many interesting facts about the Matterhorn and its history.

Just a few meters below the gondola station in a hollow, you’ll find the first highlight of the trail, the Schwarzsee lake, and a small chapel standing on its shores. Many mountaineers stop by here after a successful ascent to the Matterhorn to give thanks.

The Matterhorn trail then leads you down deeper into the “Zmutt” valley passing by the Matterhorn’s North Side, one of its most beautiful angles. Being so close the Matterhorn will reveal its true size and beauty to you. Besides the astonishing sight of the Matterhorn’s north side, there is much more to admire and explore. The surrounding landscape and the remaining of the mountain glaciers reveal how nature is changing.

Bayard Tip: If you prefer to have a more challenging hike, then do it the opposite way around. Instead of walking down from Schwarzsee to Zermatt, start from the town and hike all the way up to the foot of the Matterhorn.

5. Edelweiss Trail (Höhbalmen) (hard)

The Edelweiss Trail is by far one of our favorite ones and we definitely recommend it, given you are an experienced hiker in high terrain. The way up is steep and demands a lot of physical fitness but once you pass the Trift and conquer the last hilltop, you’ll be flashed by the magical moment when the pinnacle of the Matterhorn appears from behind it.

At the top, you’ll reach one of Zermatt’s best viewpoints, Höhbalmen. After climbing up roughly 1000km in altitude, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. The perfect chance to take pictures of the north face of the Matterhorn with the Zmuttgrat ridge, the Liskamm, Breithorn, and even the Monte Rosa massif.

Along the way, you might get lucky to see all sorts of animals; the Valais Blacknose sheep, a deer, or chamois. If you’re really lucky you might even spot a mountain eagle. And that’s not all yet, the trail isn’t called the Edelweiss trail for no reason. Along the path, you might spot these beautiful flowers. So be sure to keep your eyes wide open.

6. Täschalp-Fluhalp (Pfulwe) (hard)

The hike of the Pfulwe (Fluh Pass) brings you deep into the wild hinterland to the east of Täsch and Zermatt, where you’ll get close to the true beauty of nature. The trail usually is devoid of people making it the perfect getaway from society, even if just for a day.

The path starts at the Täschalp where it will lead you up the steep valley of the Mellichbach river. Along the way at the foot of the Rimpfischhorn, you might be able to spot some chamois and other mountain wildlife that frequently gather around the terrain. The trail then continues past several small lakes all the way up to the Pfulwe providing you with many great photo opportunities. After reaching the top, you’ll start the descent into the lush green landscape around Fluhalp.

After reaching Fluhalp you’ll have various different opportunities to continue your hike or make your way down the valley back to Zermatt. If you’re not ready yet to leave the beautiful nature behind, you could make a stop at the Fluhalp hut for a tasty meal or refreshing drink to refill your energy tanks whilst enjoying the magnificent view of the Matterhorn.

We hope we can all agree that Zermatt is one of the prettiest towns in Switzerland, especially thanks to the Matterhorn. Surrounded by mountains, there is so much you can do outdoors. The past few months have kept us away from nature, that’s why this guide focuses on awesome things you can do outside.

Top 5 Things To Do In Zermatt In Summer 2020

1. Go Hiking

Hiking is for sure one of the top things to do in Zermatt during the summer months. Whether you like a challenging hike or rather a relaxing stroll to enjoy the amazing views, Zermatt has everything to offer.

With almost 400 kilometers of marked hiking and mountain trails around Zermatt, Täsch, and Randa. There are plenty of hikes you can do during your stay in Zermatt. Because let’s be honest, is there a better way to enjoy nature than being surrounded by scenic views of the Matterhorn and its surrounding mountains?

After an unexpectedly short winter season, we had to list skiing as one of the top things to do. But not only that, everyone should try skiing in summer at least once. Where else to do it if not in Europe’s highest summer ski area?

Even in summer, we are lucky to have up to 21km of slopes that are in great condition thanks to the Theodul Glacier. Take the gondola up to the breath-taking altitude of 3’883 meters above sea level and spend a great day skiing.

Be sure to wake up early for the best experience. In summer, skiing is best done in the morning before the sun gets too strong and the slopes get soggy.

And who knows, you might end up being lucky to meet one of your favorite ski stars. Zermatt is one of the top destinations for many national ski teams where they train for their next competitions. With all the activities you can do up in the mountains, sometimes it’s nice to stay in town as well. Strolling through the village is a must, even if you don’t shop. But if you do like shopping, you have plenty of options. From souvenir shops to fashion and sports shops, there are plenty of options.
